Allow Passengers to Exit Before Boarding
Allowing passengers to exit before boarding is a simple but essential principle of metro safety and public discipline. When passengers waiting on the platform block the doorway, those inside cannot leave safely, congestion increases and children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities may be placed at greater risk. Children should wait behind the safety line or within the designated boarding markings until the train has stopped and the doors have opened completely. They should stand to the side of the doorway, keeping the centre clear for passengers who are alighting. Moving forward only after the exit path is clear creates a safer and more efficient flow.
Rushing into the train as soon as the doors open can cause collisions, falls and separation from accompanying adults. It may also trap passengers who need more time to alight, including young children, senior citizens, pregnant passengers, persons carrying luggage and passengers with disabilities. Patience and courtesy are therefore important safety responsibilities.
Children must never push through passengers, squeeze into narrow spaces or compete for seats. A seat is never more important than another person’s safety. Once all passengers have exited, children should board calmly under adult supervision and move inside the coach so that the doorway remains available to others.
Boarding markings, arrows and queue lines should be followed wherever provided. These systems are designed to organise passenger movement and reduce conflict at the doors. Children should learn that respecting a queue demonstrates discipline, fairness and consideration for the entire travelling community.
Parents and teachers should model the correct behaviour by standing aside, waiting patiently and never encouraging children to rush for a seat. Adults should explain that orderly boarding helps trains maintain their schedules while protecting passengers from avoidable injury.
The principle also applies when leaving the metro train. Passengers inside should prepare appropriately, but those waiting near the doorway should allow them to pass without obstruction. Children already inside the coach should avoid standing unnecessarily near the exit and should make space for passengers reaching their station.
As India develops world-class metro systems, passenger etiquette must advance alongside infrastructure. A modern transport culture is reflected not only in sophisticated trains and stations but also in the patience, courtesy and discipline of those who use them.
