Our Mission to Protect Young Lives
Protecting young lives is a fundamental national responsibility and the central purpose of RailVidya Children’s Safety Education, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). Our mission is to ensure that every child receives clear, practical and age-appropriate knowledge to recognise railway-related risks, make responsible decisions and remain safe in stations, on platforms, aboard trains, at level crossings and within communities situated near railway infrastructure.
We believe that every child has the right to safe mobility and that no young life should be placed at risk because of insufficient awareness, misinformation or preventable behaviour. Children may not fully understand the speed and stopping distance of trains, the dangers of electrical installations or the serious consequences of trespassing and distraction. RailVidya therefore seeks to transform essential safety instructions into meaningful education that children can understand, remember and practise confidently.
Our mission extends beyond communicating rules. It is designed to develop a lifelong culture of safety through knowledge, discipline, vigilance and responsible behaviour. Children are taught never to walk, play, sit, take photographs or use mobile devices on railway tracks; never to board or alight from a moving train; to remain behind designated platform safety lines; to use authorised foot overbridges, subways and level crossings; to respect warning signs and announcements; and to seek assistance from authorised personnel whenever required.
RailVidya adopts a positive, child-centred educational approach that builds awareness without creating fear. Classroom sessions, illustrated materials, stories, demonstrations, quizzes, role-play, activity sheets, safety clubs and responsible digital resources make learning engaging and memorable. By explaining why each safety practice matters, the programme helps children develop sound judgement rather than merely memorising instructions.
Schools and teachers are essential partners in this protective mission. RailVidya aims to support educational institutions with structured learning resources, awareness programmes and practical activities that can be integrated into assemblies, classroom education, life-skills programmes and community outreach. Regular reinforcement enables railway-safety awareness to become part of a child’s everyday thinking and conduct.
Parents and families also play a vital role. Children learn strongly through observation, and responsible adult behaviour provides one of the most effective forms of safety education. RailVidya encourages parents and guardians to demonstrate patience, use authorised routes, avoid dangerous shortcuts, follow railway instructions and supervise children appropriately during journeys. When school-based learning and responsible family practices work together, safety messages become more credible, consistent and effective.
Our mission gives particular attention to children living and studying in railway-adjacent, rural, remote and underserved communities. Frequent exposure to railway tracks can sometimes lead to familiarity with unsafe practices and an underestimation of risk. RailVidya seeks to reach these communities through accessible programmes adapted to local conditions, regional languages, age groups and learning abilities, ensuring that essential railway-safety knowledge is available to every child without discrimination.
Protecting young lives also requires strong institutional and community cooperation. AIRSC seeks to connect schools, parents, railway professionals, public authorities, safety specialists, civil-society organisations and community leaders through a shared framework of education and prevention. Railway safety cannot be achieved by one institution alone; it requires coordinated participation and a collective commitment to protecting human life.
Children are not only beneficiaries of this mission but also powerful partners in advancing it. RailVidya encourages every participating student to become a Young Rail Safety Ambassador who promotes responsible practices among classmates, family members and neighbours. An informed child can question unsafe behaviour, encourage the use of authorised crossings and inspire others to respect warnings and public-safety regulations.
The programme also nurtures broader values of citizenship, including respect for railway personnel, care for public property, cleanliness, environmental responsibility and consideration for fellow passengers, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. These values help children understand that safety is connected to discipline, compassion, civic responsibility and respect for the national transportation system.
As India advances towards Viksit Bharat 2047, modern railway infrastructure and advanced safety technologies must be supported by a well-informed society. RailVidya’s mission complements the nation’s progress by preparing a generation capable of using modern mobility systems safely and responsibly. Educating children today will strengthen public-safety behaviour, support accident prevention and contribute to a safer, smarter and more inclusive railway future.
