The RailVidya National Child Safety and Responsible Citizenship Mission is a comprehensive national educational initiative of RailVidya, the children’s safety education wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). The Mission is dedicated to empowering children and young people with practical safety knowledge, responsible behavioural values and the civic awareness required to protect themselves, support others and contribute meaningfully to society. It recognises that child safety and responsible citizenship are closely connected: a child who understands risk, respects rules, values public property and acts with care can become a powerful ambassador for safety within the family, school and community.
The Mission presents safety education as an essential part of a child’s intellectual, emotional, social and civic development. Its objective is not merely to communicate safety instructions, but to develop lasting habits of alertness, discipline, empathy, responsibility and prevention. Through age-appropriate learning materials, online courses, school-awareness programmes, interactive activities, safety campaigns, demonstrations and community participation, RailVidya helps students understand how thoughtful decisions and responsible conduct can prevent accidents, reduce avoidable harm and protect human life.
The programme covers a broad and integrated range of subjects, including school safety, road and travel safety, railway and metro safety, level-crossing awareness, home and electrical safety, fire prevention, food and health safety, environmental responsibility, internet and cybersecurity, personal protection, basic first aid, emergency communication and disaster preparedness. Each subject is designed to provide children with relevant knowledge, practical guidance and the confidence to respond appropriately to everyday risks and emergency situations.
Special importance is given to railway and metro safety because children frequently encounter stations, platforms, trains, level crossings, escalators, lifts, foot overbridges, subways and other passenger environments. RailVidya educates young travellers to remain alert, stand behind designated safety lines, avoid railway tracks and restricted areas, use authorised crossings, follow warning signs, allow passengers to exit before boarding and respect the directions of railway, metro, security and emergency personnel. Such education helps children become safer passengers while strengthening a wider culture of responsible public-transport behaviour.
Responsible citizenship forms a central pillar of the Mission. Students are encouraged to respect laws and safety regulations, protect public property, maintain cleanliness, conserve natural resources, demonstrate courtesy in public places and assist children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities whenever appropriate. The Mission also promotes honesty, inclusion, compassion, gender respect, digital responsibility, environmental awareness and sensitivity towards the needs and rights of others. These values help young learners understand that citizenship is expressed through responsible actions in everyday life.
The Mission places children at the centre of safety transformation by encouraging them to become Young Safety Ambassadors. Under the guiding principle of “Learn Safety, Practise Safety and Share Safety,” every participating student is encouraged to carry at least one meaningful safety message from the classroom to the home and from the home to the wider community. Through the concept of “One Child–One Family–One Safety Message,” RailVidya seeks to create a multiplying effect in which the knowledge received by one child can positively influence parents, siblings, friends and neighbours.
Schools and teachers are vital partners in achieving this national vision. RailVidya supports educational institutions with structured learning modules, safety presentations, activity sheets, awareness posters, digital resources, student pledges, quizzes, competitions, mock drills and Safety Club activities. Teachers can reinforce these lessons through classroom discussions and practical demonstrations, while parents can strengthen them through consistent guidance and responsible example at home. This partnership among students, schools, families and communities ensures that safety education becomes a continuous learning process rather than an occasional awareness activity.
The Mission also promotes preparedness without creating fear. Children are taught how to identify hazards, seek assistance from trusted adults, contact emergency services, communicate essential information and respond calmly during an unexpected situation. Basic first-aid awareness, evacuation discipline and disaster-preparedness education can help students make safer decisions while recognising that specialised emergencies must always be handled by trained professionals and authorised agencies.
Through its national outreach, RailVidya aspires to make safety education accessible to students from diverse geographical, linguistic, social and educational backgrounds. The programme supports inclusive and child-friendly learning through digital education, multilingual resources, school engagement and community-based activities. It seeks to reach children in urban centres, rural communities, railway-adjacent areas and regions where access to structured safety education may be limited.
