RAILVIDYA COMMUNITY SAFETY OUTREACH MISSION

The RailVidya Community Safety Outreach Mission, an initiative of RailVidya under the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC), extends practical railway, metro, road, travel and everyday safety education from schools into families and communities. Through inclusive awareness programmes, local participation and youth leadership, the Mission promotes responsible behaviour, emergency preparedness and accident prevention—helping build safer, more disciplined and safety-conscious communities across India.

RailVidya Community Safety Outreach Mission
Educating Communities • Encouraging Responsible Behaviour • Preventing Accidents • Protecting Lives

The RailVidya Community Safety Outreach Mission is a national public-education and community-engagement initiative of RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Safety Education Programme, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). The Mission is dedicated to extending essential railway, metro, road, travel and everyday safety knowledge beyond classrooms and into families, neighbourhoods and communities across India. It seeks to transform safety awareness into responsible daily behaviour through inclusive education, local participation and sustained public engagement.

Railway and metro safety is a shared social responsibility. Safe infrastructure, modern technology and effective enforcement are essential, but their full benefits can be achieved only when people understand risks, follow authorised procedures and respect safety regulations. The Mission therefore promotes practical knowledge on safe conduct at railway stations, metro premises, platforms, level crossings, foot overbridges, subways, passenger areas and other transport environments.

Special attention is given to communities located near railway tracks, stations, level crossings, metro corridors and other transport facilities. Outreach activities are designed to address behaviours that may lead to preventable accidents, including trespassing on tracks, crossing under or around closed gates, using mobile phones near moving trains, travelling on footboards, attempting to board or alight from moving vehicles, obstructing doors, entering restricted areas and ignoring warning signs or announcements. Safety messages are communicated in clear, age-appropriate and locally understandable formats.

The Mission brings together students, teachers, parents, youth volunteers, resident associations, local institutions, railway and metro personnel, transport professionals, civil-society organisations and community leaders. Through awareness programmes, neighbourhood meetings, safety demonstrations, public campaigns, digital learning sessions, posters, videos, quizzes and interactive activities, RailVidya encourages every participant to become an informed and responsible partner in accident prevention.

Children and young people occupy a central place in this initiative. By developing safety knowledge, discipline, confidence and communication skills, they can become Young Safety Ambassadors who practise responsible behaviour and share accurate safety messages with classmates, families and neighbours. Their participation helps carry safety education from the school into the wider community and supports the development of lifelong preventive habits.

The outreach framework also promotes preparedness for emergencies. Communities are encouraged to recognise warning signs, remain calm, avoid crowding, follow official instructions, identify authorised safety and security personnel and use emergency facilities responsibly. Basic awareness of first aid, disaster preparedness, electrical hazards, fire safety, cyber safety and child protection may also be integrated into local programmes according to community needs.

The Mission follows an inclusive and people-centred approach, ensuring that safety communication is accessible to children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and communities with different linguistic, educational and social backgrounds. Local languages, visual resources and practical demonstrations are used wherever necessary so that important safety messages can be understood, remembered and applied by everyone.

In alignment with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the RailVidya Community Safety Outreach Mission supports the development of a safer, more disciplined, inclusive and responsible mobility culture. As India’s railway and metro networks continue to modernise, community awareness must advance with equal commitment. Every informed citizen strengthens public safety, and every responsible action contributes to protecting lives.

Through education, cooperation and community leadership, RailVidya aims to build a nationwide movement in which safety becomes a shared value and an everyday practice. The Mission carries a clear message to every community:

Learn Safety • Practise Safety • Share Safety • Protect Every Life
