Dear Students,
Every child is precious, and every life deserves the highest level of care and protection. Your safety at school, at home, on the road, during railway and metro journeys, in public places and in the digital world is the central purpose of RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Safety Education Programme, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). Through practical education and positive guidance, RailVidya seeks to help you recognise risks, make responsible decisions and develop safety habits that will protect you throughout your life.
Safety is not merely a collection of instructions displayed on signs or repeated during awareness programmes. It is a way of thinking and behaving responsibly every day. A safety-conscious student remains alert, respects rules, avoids unnecessary risks and seeks assistance whenever a situation appears unsafe, confusing or uncomfortable. Even a simple decision—such as waiting patiently, using an authorised crossing or putting away a mobile phone—can prevent an accident and protect a precious life.
Whenever you travel by railway or metro, remain with your parents, teachers, guardians or authorised group leaders. At stations, stay behind the platform safety line, walk carefully and follow all official announcements, warning signs and instructions. Allow passengers to exit before boarding, enter or leave a train only after it has stopped completely, and never run, push, play or block closing doors. Use foot overbridges, subways and officially designated crossings whenever you need to move from one platform or side of the railway line to another.
Railway tracks are restricted operational areas and must never be used for walking, playing, sitting, cycling, taking photographs or as shortcuts. Trains may approach quickly and quietly from either direction, including on an adjacent track. Never cross under or around a closed railway gate, and always obey barriers, warning lights, bells and authorised railway personnel. Overhead electrical wires, signalling equipment and other railway installations can carry serious risks and must never be touched, approached or misused.
Mobile phones, headphones, games, videos and photography can create dangerous distractions near railway tracks, level crossings, platforms, escalators and metro doors. Put devices away whenever your full attention is required. Remove headphones before approaching an authorised railway crossing and remain attentive until you are completely clear of the railway area. No call, photograph, video or social-media post is more important than your safety.
Responsible behaviour is equally important on roads and in other forms of public transport. Use pavements, pedestrian crossings, subways and foot overbridges wherever available. Obey traffic signals, wear a certified helmet while travelling on a two-wheeler and fasten your seat belt during every vehicle journey. Never board or alight from a moving vehicle, travel on a footboard or cross a road while looking at a mobile phone. A few seconds of patience can protect an entire lifetime.
Your school should always be a place of safe learning, mutual respect and inclusion. Walk calmly through corridors and stairways, follow classroom, laboratory, sports and playground instructions, and participate seriously in emergency drills. Never create panic, spread rumours, bully another student or hide a dangerous condition. If you notice damaged equipment, exposed electrical wiring, smoke, fire, unsafe structures or suspicious activity, report it immediately to a teacher or another responsible adult.
Safety also begins at home. Keep away from exposed wires, damaged appliances, cooking gas, medicines, chemicals, matches, lighters and sharp objects unless a responsible adult is supervising you. Never touch electrical switches or appliances with wet hands. If you notice smoke, fire, a gas smell or another household danger, move to a safe place and inform an adult immediately. Protecting water, electricity and the environment is also part of responsible citizenship.
In the digital world, protect your identity and personal information. Never share passwords, one-time passwords, banking details, private photographs, live locations or confidential family information. Avoid suspicious links, unknown friend requests, fraudulent offers and unsafe downloads. If you experience cyberbullying, impersonation, threats or inappropriate communication, do not respond in fear or secrecy—save the relevant information and report it promptly to a trusted parent, teacher or guardian.
During any emergency, your first responsibility is to protect yourself from immediate danger. Remain calm, move towards a safe location and alert a responsible adult, authorised official or emergency service. Communicate the location and nature of the emergency clearly and accurately. Never enter a dangerous area, touch an electrical casualty, crowd an injured person or attempt a hazardous rescue meant for trained professionals. Asking for qualified help is an act of intelligence and courage.
You also have the power to make your family, school and community safer. Learn accurate safety messages, practise them consistently and share them responsibly with others. Remind family members to wear helmets and seat belts, avoid mobile-phone distraction, respect railway gates, protect public property and follow authorised instructions. One correct safety message shared at the right time can prevent an accident and save a life.
RailVidya invites every student to become a Young Safety Ambassador—not by entering dangerous situations, but by demonstrating discipline, compassion and responsible behaviour. A Young Safety Ambassador leads through personal example, helps organise school-awareness activities, supports younger children and persons with disabilities, reports hazards to responsible adults and encourages others to respect safety rules. True leadership begins when you make the correct decision even when nobody is watching.
As India advances towards Viksit Bharat 2047, the nation needs young citizens who value life, respect public systems, use technology responsibly and contribute to sustainable development. Modern railways, metros, smart stations and digital services can achieve their full purpose only when passengers use them with awareness and discipline. Every child who learns safety strengthens the nation, and every accident prevented is a victory for the entire community.
Dear students, always remember that courage does not mean taking unnecessary risks. Courage means recognising danger, stepping away from it and seeking the right assistance. Independence does not mean handling every problem alone; it means understanding your limitations and making responsible choices. Safety does not restrict your freedom—it protects your future and allows you to learn, travel, grow and succeed with confidence.
Your dreams are valuable. Your journey is important. Your life is irreplaceable. Let safety become your knowledge, discipline become your strength, compassion become your character and responsible citizenship become your contribution to India.
