Dear Students,
Young minds possess extraordinary potential to learn, influence others and shape the future. The knowledge and habits you develop during childhood become the foundation of your character and citizenship. RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Safety Education Programme, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC), encourages every student to use knowledge wisely, make responsible choices and develop lifelong safety awareness.
Safety begins with the ability to recognise risk before it becomes an accident. A responsible student observes the surroundings, respects established rules, avoids unnecessary danger and seeks help whenever a situation feels unsafe or confusing. Responsible decision-making is not based on fear; it is based on awareness, discipline and respect for life. A single thoughtful choice can prevent injury, protect another person and create a safer environment for everyone.
During railway and metro journeys, children should remain with their parents, teachers, guardians or authorised group leaders. They must walk carefully through stations, stand behind platform safety lines and follow all official signs and announcements. Passengers should be allowed to exit before boarding, and children must enter or leave a train only after it has stopped completely. Running, pushing, playing near platform edges and blocking closing doors are dangerous actions that must always be avoided.
Railway tracks are restricted areas intended exclusively for trains and authorised railway activities. Children must never walk, sit, play, cycle, take photographs or use shortcuts on railway tracks. Foot overbridges, subways and authorised crossings must always be used. Closed railway gates, warning lights, bells, barriers and instructions from authorised personnel must be obeyed without exception. Overhead electrical wires and railway equipment must never be touched or approached.
Mobile phones and headphones can create serious distractions near railway tracks, platforms, level crossings, station gates, escalators and metro doors. Responsible students put their devices away whenever full attention is required. They never take selfies near tracks or restricted areas, watch videos while walking through stations or wear headphones when approaching an authorised railway crossing. No call, message or photograph is more important than personal safety.
Responsible choices are equally important on roads and in public transport. Children should use pavements, pedestrian crossings, subways and foot overbridges whenever available. They must obey traffic signals, wear certified helmets on two-wheelers and fasten seat belts during every vehicle journey. Crossing a road while using a mobile phone, boarding a moving vehicle or travelling on a footboard can place a life in immediate danger.
At school, students contribute directly to a safe and supportive learning environment. Walking calmly through corridors, using stairways carefully, following laboratory and playground instructions and participating seriously in emergency drills are important responsibilities. Unsafe structures, damaged electrical equipment, bullying and suspicious activity must be reported promptly to a teacher or another trusted adult. Responsible students also support younger children and classmates with disabilities without placing themselves in danger.
At home, children should stay away from exposed wires, damaged appliances, cooking gas, medicines, chemicals, matches, lighters and sharp objects. They should never attempt electrical repairs, handle a gas leak or fight a fire without trained adult assistance. If smoke, fire, a gas smell or another hazard is noticed, the safest choice is to move away, inform a responsible adult and follow emergency instructions.
Digital responsibility is now an essential part of personal safety. Children must protect their passwords, photographs, live locations and private family information. One-time passwords, PINs and banking details should never be disclosed. Suspicious links, unknown friend requests, online threats, cyberbullying and fraudulent offers must be reported to a trusted parent, teacher or guardian. A responsible digital citizen uses technology for learning and communication without harming personal safety, privacy or the dignity of others.
During an emergency, children should remain calm, move towards a safe location and seek help from a responsible adult, authorised official or emergency service. They should communicate the location and nature of the emergency clearly and accurately. Students must never enter a hazardous area, touch an electrical casualty, crowd an injured person or attempt a dangerous rescue intended for trained professionals. Recognising personal limitations is an important part of responsible behaviour.
Every student has the ability to influence a family, school and community through positive example. A child who consistently wears a seat belt may remind an entire family to travel safely. A student who respects a railway gate may influence friends to avoid dangerous shortcuts. A young person who refuses to share unverified information may prevent fear and confusion during an emergency. Small actions, repeated every day, can produce meaningful social change.
RailVidya encourages students to become Young Safety Ambassadors by learning correct safety information, practising responsible habits and sharing verified messages with others. A Young Safety Ambassador does not undertake dangerous interventions or replace trained professionals. Instead, the student observes carefully, reports hazards, encourages safe behaviour, respects public property and demonstrates leadership through discipline and compassion.
India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047 requires young citizens who combine knowledge with responsibility. Modern railways, metros, roads, schools and digital systems can fulfil their purpose only when people use them safely and respectfully. Every accident prevented protects a family, strengthens a community and supports national progress.
Dear students, your age does not limit your ability to make a difference. Every responsible choice you make today prepares you to become a thoughtful and capable leader tomorrow. Let awareness guide your actions, discipline strengthen your character and compassion inspire your service to others.
