Dear Students,
Every student has the ability to make a meaningful contribution to the safety of the family, school and community. Leadership does not always begin with a position, uniform or formal title. It begins with awareness, responsible behaviour and the courage to make the correct choice. RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Safety Education Programme, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC), believes that every student can become a Young Safety Ambassador by learning accurate safety information, practising it consistently and sharing it responsibly with others.
A Young Safety Ambassador is a student who understands essential safety principles and demonstrates them through everyday conduct. The role is built upon three connected commitments: Learn Safety, Practise Safety and Share Safety. Learning provides knowledge, practice transforms that knowledge into lasting habits and sharing extends its benefits to families, schools and communities. When students lead through personal example, their actions become more powerful than words alone.
Becoming a Young Safety Ambassador begins with alertness. Students should learn to recognise hazards at school, at home, on roads, during railway and metro journeys, in public places and online. They should understand that risks must never be ignored, treated casually or approached without proper knowledge. When an unsafe condition is noticed, the responsible action is to move away from danger and report it to a parent, teacher, authorised official or trained professional.
During railway and metro journeys, Young Safety Ambassadors remain with their parents, teachers, guardians or authorised group leaders. They walk carefully through stations, stand behind platform safety lines and obey signs, signals and announcements. They allow passengers to exit before boarding, enter or leave only after the train stops and never run, push, play or block closing doors. When door-closing warnings begin, they stop, step back and wait patiently for the next train.
A responsible student understands that railway tracks are restricted operational areas. Young Safety Ambassadors never walk, sit, play, cycle, take photographs or use shortcuts on railway tracks. They use foot overbridges, subways and authorised crossings, and they never pass under or around a closed railway gate. They also stay away from overhead electrical wires, signals and other operational railway equipment.
Mobile-phone distraction must be avoided near tracks, platforms, level crossings, roads, escalators and metro doors. A Young Safety Ambassador puts away the device whenever full attention is required and removes headphones before approaching an authorised railway crossing. The student understands that no call, message, game, photograph or video is more important than safety.
On roads and in public transport, Young Safety Ambassadors use pavements, pedestrian crossings and authorised routes. They obey traffic signals, wear certified helmets on two-wheelers and fasten seat belts during every vehicle journey. They never cross roads while using mobile phones, board moving vehicles or travel on footboards. Through their own behaviour, they encourage friends and family members to follow the same life-saving practices.
At school, a Young Safety Ambassador helps strengthen a culture of safety, discipline and inclusion. The student walks calmly through corridors and stairways, follows classroom, laboratory, playground and school-bus instructions and participates seriously in emergency drills. Hazards such as exposed wires, damaged equipment, unsafe structures, blocked exits, bullying or suspicious activity are reported immediately to a teacher or another responsible adult.
Young Safety Ambassadors also demonstrate kindness and social responsibility. They support younger children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities in safe and appropriate ways. They respect queues, reserved facilities, public property, sanitation systems and safety personnel. They never encourage dangerous challenges, spread rumours or ridicule another child for asking for help. Compassion and inclusion are essential parts of safety leadership.
At home, responsible students follow family safety rules and remain aware of risks involving electricity, fire, cooking gas, medicines, chemicals and unsafe storage. They do not attempt electrical repairs, handle hazardous substances or fight fires without trained assistance. If they notice smoke, exposed wires, a gas smell or another danger, they move to safety and inform a responsible adult immediately.
In the digital world, a Young Safety Ambassador protects passwords, personal photographs, live locations and private family information. The student never shares an OTP, PIN or banking detail, and avoids suspicious links, unknown friend requests and fraudulent offers. Cyberbullying, impersonation, threats and inappropriate communication are reported to a trusted adult. Responsible digital leadership also means verifying information before forwarding it and respecting the privacy and dignity of others.
During an emergency, Young Safety Ambassadors remain calm, move towards a safe place and alert responsible adults or authorised services. They communicate the location and nature of the emergency clearly and accurately. They never crowd an injured person, touch an electrical casualty, enter a hazardous area or attempt a dangerous rescue beyond their age and training. Their responsibility is to raise the alarm, share correct information and cooperate with trained professionals.
Students can promote safety through school assemblies, supervised campaigns, quizzes, poster competitions, digital learning, peer education and RailVidya Safety Clubs. They can prepare accurate messages, conduct awareness activities under teacher guidance and share one important safety reminder with their families. Every activity should be positive, age-appropriate, factually correct and undertaken with responsible adult supervision.
The role of a Young Safety Ambassador is to educate, encourage, observe and report. It is never to enforce rules, confront strangers, control crowds or enter dangerous locations. Children must not replace railway personnel, police officers, firefighters, medical workers or emergency responders. Understanding these limits protects students while allowing them to contribute responsibly.
The idea of One Child • One Family • One Safety Message demonstrates the power of student participation. One child who shares a correct message about helmets, seat belts, railway crossings, platform safety or online security may influence an entire family. One family that practises the message may inspire neighbours and friends. In this way, a single student can begin a wider movement of awareness and prevention.
As India progresses towards Viksit Bharat 2047, the country needs young citizens who value life, respect rules, protect public property, use technology responsibly and care for the environment. Safety-conscious students of today will become the responsible passengers, professionals, parents and national leaders of tomorrow. Every safe decision strengthens society, and every preventable accident avoided is an achievement for the nation.
Dear students, you do not have to wait until adulthood to become a leader. You can begin today by following safety rules, correcting your own behaviour, sharing verified information and inspiring others through personal example. Your awareness can prevent harm, your discipline can influence others and your responsible voice can protect a precious life.
