Dear Students,
The knowledge you gain today shapes the person you will become tomorrow. Learning safety is one of the most valuable parts of your education because it equips you with the awareness, discipline and confidence needed to recognise hazards, prevent avoidable harm and make responsible decisions. RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Safety Education Programme, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC), is committed to helping every child develop these essential life skills.
Safety education is not limited to memorising rules. It teaches you to observe your surroundings, understand possible risks, remain calm during difficult situations and seek appropriate assistance without fear. When safety becomes part of your daily thinking and behaviour, it protects not only your life but also the lives of your family members, friends, fellow passengers and community.
At railway and metro stations, responsible conduct begins with alertness and discipline. Always remain with your parents, teachers, guardians or authorised group leaders. Walk carefully, follow designated routes, stand behind the platform safety line and obey official announcements. Allow passengers to exit before boarding, wait until the train stops completely and never run, push, play or obstruct closing doors. If the door-closing warning begins, stop immediately, step back and wait safely for the next train.
Railway tracks are restricted operational areas and must never be used for walking, sitting, playing, cycling, photography or shortcuts. Use only authorised foot overbridges, subways and designated crossings. Never cross under or around a closed railway gate, and always obey warning lights, bells, barriers and authorised personnel. Railway electrical installations, overhead wires, signals and operational equipment must never be touched or approached.
Digital responsibility is also an important part of travel safety. Mobile phones, headphones, games, videos and photography can reduce your awareness of approaching trains, announcements, warning sounds and surrounding passengers. Put your device away whenever you are walking through a station, using stairs or escalators, approaching a platform or crossing a railway area. No call, message, photograph or video is more important than your life.
Safety must also guide your behaviour on roads. Use pavements, pedestrian crossings, subways and foot overbridges wherever available. Stop, look, listen and think carefully before crossing. Obey traffic signals, wear a certified helmet while travelling on a two-wheeler and fasten your seat belt during every vehicle journey. Never use a mobile phone while crossing a road, travel on a vehicle footboard or board and alight from a moving vehicle.
At school, follow classroom, laboratory, sports, playground and school-bus safety instructions. Walk calmly through corridors and stairways, keep exits unobstructed and participate seriously in emergency drills. Report damaged equipment, exposed electrical wires, unsafe structures, bullying or suspicious activity to a teacher or responsible adult. A safe school culture grows when students care for one another and make responsible choices even when nobody is watching.
At home, remain aware of risks involving electricity, fire, cooking gas, medicines, chemicals and unsafe storage. Never touch switches or appliances with wet hands, attempt electrical repairs or play with matches, lighters and hazardous materials. If you notice smoke, fire, exposed wires or a gas smell, move to a safe place and immediately inform a responsible adult. Protecting water, energy and the natural environment is also an important part of responsible living.
In the digital world, protect your passwords, photographs, location and personal information. Never disclose an OTP, PIN or banking detail. Avoid suspicious links, unknown friend requests, misleading offers and unsafe downloads. Verify information before forwarding it, communicate respectfully and report cyberbullying, threats or inappropriate content to a trusted adult. Technology should support your education and development without compromising your safety, privacy or well-being.
During an emergency, protect yourself from immediate danger, remain as calm as possible and alert a responsible adult, authorised official or emergency service. Communicate the location and nature of the emergency clearly. Never enter a hazardous area, touch an electrical casualty, crowd an injured person or attempt a dangerous rescue meant for trained professionals. Responsible action means knowing when to help directly and when to call qualified assistance.
Leadership begins with personal example. A student who follows safety rules consistently, respects public property, supports younger children, assists persons with disabilities and shares verified information demonstrates genuine leadership. You do not need a position or title to influence others positively. Every careful decision and responsible action can inspire your classmates, family and community.
RailVidya encourages you to become a Young Safety Ambassador by learning accurate safety messages, practising them every day and sharing them responsibly. Encourage others to wear helmets and seat belts, respect railway gates, use authorised crossings, avoid digital distraction and follow emergency instructions. Your role is to educate, encourage and report hazards—not to enter dangerous situations or replace trained professionals.
India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047 requires modern infrastructure, advanced technology and responsible citizens who respect rules and value human life. A truly developed nation is not measured only by the speed of its trains, the scale of its cities or the power of its technology. It is also measured by the awareness of its people, the protection of its children and its commitment to preventing avoidable accidents.
Every safety lesson you learn today prepares you to lead tomorrow with greater wisdom and responsibility. Every safe habit you practise strengthens your character. Every correct message you share can protect another person. By becoming alert, disciplined, compassionate and safety-conscious, you contribute directly to safer families, safer schools, safer journeys and a stronger nation.
Dear students, your ideas can inspire change, your behaviour can influence others and your leadership can protect lives. Let safety become your knowledge, responsibility become your strength and service to society become your purpose.
